Reduce Costs for Schools

We work to help ensure that schools pay the lowest available prices for the Internet connectivity and network equipment they need.

Creating Pricing Transparency

Picture
EducationSuperHighway is developing a Benchmark Pricing Database of the prices schools are paying for network equipment and Internet services.  Schools routinely pay different prices for the same equipment and services - a situation we must remedy to ensure that schools maximize the impact of their technology investments.

The Benchmark Pricing Database will enable schools to find replicable best-practice prices for Internet connectivity and network equipment in their area. This will empower schools to make informed decisions about the quality and cost-effectiveness of the vendor solutions they choose, and enable them to make the most of limited budgets by getting the best deals from vendors.

Increasing School Buying Power

Picture
EducationSuperHighway is fostering regional relationships between districts and states in order to create Regional Fiber Consortia (RFC). State broadband networks and buying consortia have already been implemented by some states to provide significant cost-savings and other advantages to K-12 schools and districts. By aggregating the purchasing power of many schools, state networks and consortia can use their collective market-power to save money while improving the quality and amount of service their constituent schools receive.

In order to accelerate the formation of Regional Fiber Constortia, EducationSuperHighway is developing a RFC Cookbook which will model the practices of successful existing consortia and create a national fiber database that will enable RFCs to locate what carriers (if any) have fiber connections available in their area. The RFC Cookbook and fiber database tool will enable under-served school districts to aggregate their demand for fiber to a scale that makes it economically attractive for carriers to invest in new fiber deployments, enable connected schools to improve service and connectivity, and lower individual costs for constituent schools.
